Chapter 34: The First Day·Sheriff Badge

A real Seer would need a strengthened spirit and a sense of responsibility. From the moment they received the Seer’s role, their mind would be brainstorming on how to communicate the information they acquired, and make the other good people believe in them. After checking the identity of the first player during the night, no matter if they were a wolf or a good person, the Seer would repeatedly ponder upon the person and their identity, urgently wanting to share this information with the rest of the good people. In particular, the Seer would be afraid of a Werewolf suddenly self-exploding, making them lose the chance to speak, or of being killed at night. For that reason, they would want to reveal any information they had gathered at the very first opportunity.

However, No. 10’s first appeal was not to tell everyone about who they had checked, but instead to fight for the Sheriff badge with another God who had revealed their identity. This was the perspective of a Wolf, not a Seer! Although the small probability that they were merely a person with a unique rationale could not be eliminated, there was a high possibility that No. 10 was a Werewolf!

Seeming as though she had realized something, No. 10’s complexion changed slightly.  She immediately said, “Last night, I checked No. 9, the reason being very simple. One, it’s because I am not familiar with anyone so I want to know the identities of the people around me first; Two, because No. 9 is just a little girl! What kind of speech can she make? If she doesn’t speak well, it doesn’t mean that she is a wolf. It would be a pity if a good person was voted out unfairly, so I might as well check her!”

Gradually, No. 10’s complexion returned to normal, carrying a touch of confidence. “Of the people participating in the election, I intend to check No. 4 since his speech today had held the intent to guide everyone down a particular line of thinking. Everyone here knows the rules of the Suspended Life Game; only after ten games can we obtain the final victory. I believe that not many people will still harbour wishful thoughts. No. 4, why would you think that you are the only one who has the consciousness to understand the game! Moreover, this time the rules have clearly stated, as long as a certain party wins, all the players who have been eliminated will also pass this round. I believe that with this rule, no matter who received the Seer role, they would treat the overall situation as their first priority.” No. 10 said confidently.

Shen Mu had to agree that No. 10’s speech was logical. But No. 4’s worries were also justified. This was No. 10 being too “naive”. The player who was Seer would think more along the lines of:

“In the case where the good side wins, all the good guys are guaranteed to pass the round. But what if the good side fails? If I was to be eliminated early on, then I would be done for! There are enough good people helping the good side win such that they won’t miss a single Seer, so it would be better for me to stay low and hide my identity in order to survive a few more rounds.”

However, No. 10 had a high chance of being a Wolf and may not think so. She was just finding the points in No. 4’s speech that could be attacked and using them as a breakthrough site from which  to accuse No. 4. This was the general way of making a speech in the Werewolf game, to find the loopholes in others’ speeches and make everyone believe in what they were saying. As for what the others really meant, that was a problem that only the good people would consider. The wolves only need to find the loopholes.

“Although No. 4 is probably a Wolf pretending to be a Civilian, I will still give him a chance and check him. I will not directly make this judgment since I have not checked him and cannot confirm if he is a wolf or not. If I check No. 4 and find that he is a Wolf, we will vote No. 4 out tomorrow. If I find that he is golden water* instead, then I won’t believe that there aren’t any Wolves taking part in the election. No. 3 jumped out as a God, so I will not talk about him for now. There will almost certainly be a Wolf who jumps out to oppose me among the remaining players, No. 12 and No. 2! Let’s vote them out first! If No. 4 really is golden water, then tomorrow we’ll look for more wolves from among the people who participated in the election.”

*T/N: In this case to be ‘golden water’ is to be ‘a good person’ or ‘a person on the good side’.

“The first night wasn’t peaceful, so the Witch’s antidote could not have been used. Tonight if I’m killed, the Witch must save me! To find the wolves without a Seer, you can only randomly vote someone out, and it won’t necessarily be the right person. It would be as difficult as ascending to Heaven! The Seer is the only Good card that can see the situation clearly and also know others’ identities. If the good people in this game want to win, you’ll need to have the consciousness to win. The antidote must be used to save the Seer! Besides, the Witch cannot use the antidote to save themselves on any other day except the first, so who would you save if you didn’t save the Seer? If the Witch in this round thinks themselves clever and I die tonight, I will leave the badge to my golden water No. 9!”

“So let me see, of No. 12 and No. 2, who will be the Wolf that will jump out to oppose me?” The girl whose name is not known, No. 10’s speech ended, and the green light in front of No. 12 Tang Youchen lit up.

“I am the Seer!” Tang Youchen frowned, seeming a little cynical, yet also seeming quite serious, “Checking a wolf yesterday was a nice surprise. I will first list who I will check next, I won’t check anyone in the election. First, I will check No. 9 and then No. 11.”

Having said that, Tang Youchen paused and said, “Does anyone want to self explode?”

……

“No exploding, that’s right, there are only three wolves, I’m afraid you can’t bear it!” Tang Youchen spoke sharply, suddenly looking at Shen Mu, his eyes revealing obvious regret, “Yesterday I checked No. 2 and found that he was a Wolf. The reason for checking him was simple, on the way here, this big brother helped me. I got the position of Seer and wanted to give him a good identity and let him speak freely as golden water should, but unfortunately, his identity was a Werewolf.” Tang Youchen looked at Shen Mu, seeming very aggrieved.

Shen Mu: …???

Tang Youchen went on to say: “Why would I check No. 9 first? Because No. 9 is the golden water declared by the Wolf who jumped out first with my identity, which makes her a card that is impossible to leave unchecked. Might as well check her first. If she really is golden water, then she would have the highest status* out of everyone here, isn’t that right? As for why I would check No. 11, it’s because I don’t sleep well at night and I seemed to hear a little bit of movement. I’m in the innermost room on the 2nd floor, and there is only No. 11 next door. Although it may also be possible that I slept very deeply and produced auditory hallucinations, but if you’re a good person, it wouldn’t be a loss if I check it out, right?” At this point, Tang Youchen also patted Su Yingxing’s shoulder next to him, with a familiar look.

*T/N: No. 9 would have the ‘highest status’ because no matter who everyone originally thought the real Seer was, No. 9 would be a good person and therefore would be believed by everyone present.

Su Yingxing: …???

“Given No. 10’s speech, it would be impossible for her to retract her claim. She is definitely a Wolf! It doesn’t matter if you don’t believe me, the Sheriff badge can be given to No. 6 first. He has basically been confirmed as the Hunter so, if given to him, we would at least know that the badge is in the hands of a good person. Today, let’s vote out the Werewolf No. 2. It’s impossible to figure out who the Seer is, so give the Sheriff badge to No. 6, and you can listen to another round of speeches. Okay, now let’s watch No. 2 perform!”

At that moment, Tang Youchen immediately ended his speech.

Shen Mu: This brother must be here to make trouble.

No. 10 and No. 12 couldn’t possibly be Wolf teammates, because No. 10 had already completed a whole set of actions that represented declaring an identity. Although she didn’t do it well, she couldn’t retract her claim. There were only three Wolves, and even if No. 10 performed imperfectly, they couldn’t send another Wolf, and No. 12’s actions…

Based on No.12’s speech, he wasn’t the real Seer either. Although he, Shen Mu, was part of a third party, a Seer would still only see him as good… No. 10 and No. 12 couldn’t both be Wolves, which meant that either No. 12 was the real Wolf claiming to possess a false identity and No. 10 was the legitimate Seer who simply spoke badly, or that No. 12 was testing Shen Mu’s identity, and would retreat shortly, leavingNo. 10 as the little she-wolf. Shen Mu was more inclined towards the latter.

Thinking of this, Shen Mu felt that his brain was overloaded, but the light in front of him had already turned green and he had no more time to think: “I am the real Seer. Yesterday, I checked No. 3 and she is a good person. She said that she is a God. I believe her, but I don’t want to guess which God she is since finding the Gods is the Wolves’ job. The Wolf team sent two people to claim my Identity? Okay, then we can vote out all three of us! Exchanging one God for two Wolves is of no loss to us. Only one last wolf would be left, and you guys will find them!”

As soon as these words came out, the scene became disturbed. However, Shen Mu remained unmoved, continuing to speak. “As for the third party, that is easy. Cupid can jump out on the first day and report which players they linked together on the second day. If Cupid doesn’t come out, then we’ll know that there’s a third party. Don’t tell me that you’re afraid of being killed by the Wolves. The Wolves also don’t know which camp Cupid belongs to including whether they are a Civilian or God on the good side. So many strong Gods are still at the scene, who would kill the Cupid first? After announcing the couple, it will be enough to just observe the couple’s behavior. Viewed separately, their identities might be hard to discern, but don’t tell me you still can’t work it out when observing them together!”

If Cupid doesn’t jump out, then they must have formed a third party, and if they do speak out, everyone would still doubt them. Even if they reveal themselves and claim that they didn’t link anyone, they may still fall under suspicion and end up voted out. They should change from passive to active and treat themselves as a “real” Seer. For the sake of the good people, they should first eliminate the Wolves, and make everyone believe their identity.

But the real Seer… don’t you think it’s impossible to be No. 10? Her speech was simply too wolf-like. Unless the real Seer didn’t take part in the election at all? Or the Robber buried the Seer… Shen Mu was a little puzzled, but his face remained calm: “No. 10 declared someone who didn’t take part in the election as golden water, therefore it is impossible for her to retreat. She must be a Wolf in disguise! Although No. 12 participated in the election and reported the person speaking after her to be a Wolf, only one person claimed to be a Seer before him and only one person was left after his speech. If he was a good person, how could he test someone’s identity at this moment in time? No. 12 also isn’t retreating. I don’t know if the two of them are wolves that didn’t plan well, or a Wolf and a third party member…”

Shen Mu hadn’t yet finished speaking when Tang Youchen suddenly tapped his finger on his phone screen, and the yellow light in front of him went out. No. 12 retreated.

Shen Mu: …???

“… No. 12 retreated? I didn’t think that No. 12 was a card that could retreat*, but since he has already retracted his claim, I won’t talk about it for the moment. The next time he speaks, No. 12 had better reveal his identity. His behavior was very bad: testing the identity of the real Seer in such a way and casting doubt on my status. If he says that he has no identity, and is a civilian card, then he will be voted out today. His behavior truly isn’t in line with the behavior of a good person.” Shen Mu said seriously, frowning.

*T/N: referring to the fact that a real Seer wouldn’t retreat from the election as they are best suited to help the good side if they are the Sheriff

Hearing Shen Mu’s words, Tang Youchen didn’t show any nervousness, his eyes wandering around, thinking about something only known to himself.

Seeing his relaxed state, Shen Mu thought to himself: Don’t tell me this person is an idiot!

However, guessing was just guessing and Shen Mu calmly continued, “I will first check No. 9 and then No. 1. I won’t check the identity of anyone else taking part in the election. I think there are more wolves down there voting. And No. 10, who tried to claim my identity, would definitely have put one of her wolf teammates as someone to check. Therefore, out of No. 9 and No. 1, at least one of them must be a Wolf. If No. 12 doesn’t reveal his identity today, we directly vote out No. 12. Vote out No. 10 the next day, and give me the Sheriff badge. If you feel that any action that I make seems wolf-like, you can confiscate my badge at any time! Or if I don’t die within three days, then directly vote me out on the third day. But at the moment, I want the badge because I am the real Seer. The Sheriff badge can only achieve its greatest effect in my hands. Even if the strong Gods get the Sheriff badge, it’s useless. No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6, if you are good people, you will retreat directly. Don’t divide the votes! Let me PK with No. 10.”

No. 2, Shen Mu’s speech ended. The one minute of voting time during which the Sheriff would be decided immediately commenced.
