Chapter 33: The First Day·Process

Du Xiulin pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose: “I don’t know whether No. 3 is a God or not because I’m not a God, I’m a Civilian. If she’d stated precisely which card she held during her speech, I might have believed her and even withdrawn in order to allow her to become the Sheriff. But her speech was quite ambiguous and it seemed to make sense when in fact it only served to just drag out the time. Sometimes three days is enough to end a game. No. 3’s speech appeared to be frank, but its real purpose could have been a delaying tactic for the wolves. I’m not a God, so I won’t talk about her identity for the time being, but the Sheriff badge must not be given to her. It’s common practice to give the Sheriff badge to the Seer, but this action is based on the premise that all 12 players are familiar with the process. Some players might not have heard of the Werewolf game before, and may not know that the Seer needs to join the election. They wouldn’t understand the importance of allocating the Sheriff badge, or… ” Du Xiulin’s tone suddenly became colder, “There may be players who don’t want to be eliminated and will hide their Seer identity, pretending to be a Civilian!”

As soon as Du Xiulin said this sentence, many people’s expressions changed. No. 6, the purple-haired man, had a face full of disdain, while the man with hair that resembled a red lion’s mane, No. 7, seemed slightly startled, as though he had never thought of the situation that way. No. 8, Bai Lin, lowered her head, her expression unreadable. Meanwhile, the ponytailed No. 10 showed no outwards change in her emotions and she maintained a slight smile.

However, everyone quickly hid their inner thoughts, and Du Xiulin also didn’t seem to care. He pushed his glasses further up his nose bridge and continued to say: “This is a version of the Werewolf that contains both a Cupid and a Robber. Even if we find the real Seer and give them the Sheriff badge,’ Du Xiulin’s slowed down his words, profoundly saying. ” ——How do we know that a person the Seer identifies as good is actually on our side? Everyone has read the rules! The Seer is only able to identify whether the player is good or a Werewolf, but their specific identity is unspecified. If a third party was formed during this round of the game, the Seer will see the Cupid and the player out of the couple who was originally on the Town side, as good people as well. Do you dare to believe that the people the Seer identifies as good are really good?”

At this point, Du Xiulin lowered his head slightly and paused before looking up, eyes revealing an incisive light. He swept his gaze across everyone: “For this reason, even giving the Seer the Sheriff badge is ineffective. We are better off voting for a good person who can lead the team. For this reason, I urge everyone to vote for me as Sheriff! First of all, I am definitely a good person. If I was a Werewolf, to draw votes I wouldn’t claim to be a Civilian. It would be better to say that I am a God in order to win everyone’s trust. But, I’m a good person and a real Civilian. In this game, good people shouldn’t have a cause to lie! At the beginning of the game Wolves always deceive everyone, and the good people, who don’t have any abilities to use during the night, are thrown into confusion. If someone thinks that they are clever and reports false information, they would only swindle the Good side——because Wolves work during the night and therefore have a clear understanding of the situation, knowing precisely who their companions are. Meanwhile, the good guys who lie only end up making everyone else on their side increasingly confused! I’ve said that I am a Civilian, and that’s because I really received a civilian role. I’m not going to lie to you and say that I’m a God, but I do have the ability to be the Sheriff! I hope that everyone can vote for me as Sheriff. Only when the good side is united can we obtain victory!”

Du Xiulin’s speaking time ended and the green light in front of him vanished.

……Du Xiulin’s speech… Shen Mu held his forehead in one hand, lowering his head in contemplation: Unless he was a well hidden Wolf, he had a high chance of genuinely being a good person. Either way, he was telling the truth: some good people will choose to speak very little in the early stages of the game, but it’s best to not lie.

The Wolves were a team that could communicate. Their operations were conscious, planned and scripted. Meanwhile, the good guys acted independently, and most of them had no opportunities to act at night, so they couldn’t access outside information. If the Good side lied to each other, every person would be writing their own script, each different from the rest. The others in their team weren’t tapeworms in their stomachs*. Lying would only make those on the Good side, who were all without abilities, more confused. In the meantime, the wolves who knew more information, would definitely be able to ascertain everyone’s identities and wipe them out before they could act. Then the good guys would be gg**.

*T/N: to be a tapeworm in another’s stomach –> to know everything they are thinking.

**T/N: GG, the gamers’ abbreviation for ‘good game’. It is usually said when the opponent has played too well and it is game-over.

Of course, if Du Xiulin was a Wolf, he could also be raising the point deliberately and using the opposition’s logic against them, claiming to be a civilian so that the Good people would believe him. But Shen Mu felt that since it was only the first round, it probably wouldn’t be that complicated yet. At present, most people were still ordinary players. With Du Xiulin’s shallow level of experience, he would more likely feel that claiming to be the Seer and giving a set of convincing arguments, or jumping out as another god, might produce a better effect. However, that wasn’t to say that Du Xiulin couldn’t be a person from the Town side, potentially a God, that wanted to pretend to be a Civilian.

And… Shen Mu looked at Du Xiulin’s calm face. It was as though the person who had been so agitated before hadn’t been him at all.

He might be a Good person, but he wasn’t necessarily a Civilian.

Shen Mu remembered what an expert had said in a Werewolf video* that he and his sister had watched before:

*T/N: Werewolf video – an online recording of a Werewolf game with live commentary by an expert.

There was a misconception that the Good side had about the Werewolf game——the Good people always thought that their task was to tell the truth and state the facts. As long as they made things clear, they believed that they would win everyone’s trust. But in fact, the important thing wasn’t having flawless logic or  saying the truth and making face-to-face speeches, winning only through luck, it was to find a way to make others believe you and follow your plans, because when some players follow their own logic, they would end up believing the Wolves or relinquishing their vote entirely.

The Good side also needed to make preemptive arrangements, especially the Gods. They needed to lead the civilians. They needed the civilians and other people who were unclear about the situation, to follow their plans. As for which information they needed to reveal, it wasn’t important whether they were telling the truth or not. What mattered was getting others to believe them. For that reason, revealing their observations and letting the civilians reach their own conclusions, consequently risking them being led astray by the Wolves, was a big taboo.

Du Xiulin’s speech had finished. The third speaker was No. 6, the one who’d recently had a major disagreement with Du Xiulin that morning, the purple-haired man.

After having listened to Du Xiulin’s arrogant words, he was clearly unconvinced and the expression on his face became even more disdainful.

“Nice way of jumping out ah. I’ve seen Wolves claim to be the Seer before, but it’s the first time that I’ve seen someone jump out as a Civilian while trying to be Sheriff! Not a single sentence of No. 4’s speech made sense. In fact, I don’t think that a speech can be much worse! I’ve played hundreds of rounds of the Werewolf game and this is the first time that I’ve heard someone say that we shouldn’t give the Sheriff’s position to either the Seer or a God, but a Civilian instead! Good people shouldn’t lie? You’re telling people on the Good side to tell the truth while saying that you’re a civilian? Are you trying to get the Good side to reveal their identities so that you can easily find out who you need to kill?”

“The Good side doesn’t have to report their identity. It’s enough for everyone to look for the Werewolves! If you’re innocent, you won’t need to have a guilty conscience. Once everyone has discussed their ideas and clearly voiced their suspicions, the wolves won’t have a loophole to find. What they say in their speeches will also reveal their flaws and if, after two days, there are still people who hem and haw and are unable to find the Wolves, then they must be a Wolf themselves!”

At this point, No. 6 gave Du Xiulin another scornful look: “As for the Sheriff badge, Du Xiulin couldn’t even analyse the situation where there is a possible third party. Was that the speech of a real Good person? I, Yan Yuze, am going to speak frankly and announce my identity. Laozi* is the Hunter! I dare say that I’m not afraid of you killing me. Whoever kills me tonight, I’ll shoot their dog’s head into pieces**! If you don’t believe me, come and try my marksmanship, see if I can aim accurately or not.”

*T/N: Laozi – an arrogant way of referring to oneself.

**T/N: Shoot their dog’s head into pieces – Du Xiulin is referring to the hunter’s ability to take someone down with them when they die.

As No. 6——Yan Yuze, finished his sentence, he swept his contemptuous gaze across everyone, eyes exuding a wicked light. Body leaning backwards slightly, limbs containing the loftiness of one looking down on the world: “I want this Sheriff badge today! There is one less god position, but they aren’t full yet. That little girl, No. 3, said that she would announce her identity on the third day. If her identity still isn’t clear by then, she will be voted out immediately! Now, I’m going to speak to those people among the audience who are on the Good side. I’m not threatening you with a gun, my gun points toward the Wolves. Good people, listen to my speech, listen to what I’m saying! Am I not thinking for the good of our team? You guys get to judge whether I’m Good or not. Please vote for me as Sheriff today! I will lead you to victory.”

As Yan Yuze’s speech ended, Shen Mu felt overwhelmed by his emotions. It was so impressive! The configuration of the town team really wasn’t bad! Yan Yuze’s speech was particularly good, not only his logic, but most importantly, his conviction. His was a kind of radiance and self-confidence that came from the heart. It was a self-confidence of which, for werewolves, was a very difficult thing to have. Yan Yuze was definitely a God.

Hunters generally wouldn’t have to face other people from their own side claiming to have their identity, and therefore Yan Yuze was probably the real Hunter. From now on, anyone wanting to become the Sheriff was no longer able to utilise the strategy of claiming to be the “the strong God leading everyone to victory”, or “the strong Civilian analyzing the situation”.

The only way was——to claim to be the Seer.

But now that half the speeches were over and no one had claimed to be the Seer … what about the wolf team? Where was the Seer? There were still No. 10 and No. 12 left to go before he would have a chance to speak. Don’t tell him that one of the two before him was the real Seer and the other was a wolf planning to jump out as Seer… Shen Mu always felt that things weren’t as simple as that.

In order to survive, the Wolves would most likely send someone into the election who would claim to be the Seer. Surely it was impossible that the real Seer was planning to refrain from revealing their identity, right?

At the moment, it appeared that Yan Yuze must be good, and so he could quite possibly be the one to win the Sheriff badge at the end of the election. Du Xiulin was also likely to be a good person. In that case, the Good side wouldn’t be in a situation where they were unguided and lacking cooperation.

Junior sister’s speech… to tell the truth, was unable to tell him whether she was a Wolf or on the Good side?

In Shen Mu’s heart, he began plotting to claim the identity of the Seer.

No. 6 Yan Yuze ended his speech, and the next to speak was No. 10.

“I’ll tell you who I plan to check. Out of the people in this election, I’ll check No. 4, and of the people voting, I’ll check No. 1. Anyone who jumps out as Seer after me will be labeled as a Wolf immediately! I am the Seer, I want the Sheriff badge.”

Here, it’s finally here.

Shen Mu instantly frowned, regarding No. 10 with a grim expression. If he were to pretend to be the “real” Seer, it was absolutely impossible for him to act nonchalantly when someone had already jumped out with his identity.

“I don’t care whether you guys are a Hunter,  another God, or a Civilian, the badge is most effective in the hands of the Seer! The role of the Sheriff is to pass down information regarding the player that has been identified during the night so that the good team can win, and not for the so-called 0.5 votes!” No. 10 wasn’t afraid to speak up against No. 6, the Hunter.

But Shen Mu couldn’t help hooking his lips up slightly, before quickly suppressing it. No. 10 wasn’t the Seer, but a little she-wolf. She’d already made one of the biggest mistakes when claiming to be the Seer, because no matter how good her speech was, she wasn’t afraid.
